CROP PROTECTION AND FOOD ADDITIVES
For agricultural applications, Copperas is in some instances dried to give a free flowing ferrous sulphate heptahydrate or further processed to generate ferrous sulphate monohydrate.
The two major areas of use in agriculture are:
As an acidifying agent for chalky soils
As a means of preventing iron chlorosis which can occur in grapes,
olives, citrus fruits and vegetables.
Plants grown in chalky or alkaline soil are likely to suffer deficiencies of trace elements mainly iron, often known as ferric chlorosis, which result in yellowing and damage to the leaves. In severe cases this can result in leaf loss and branch decay, all with consequent serious reduction in plant yield. Copperas or one of its derived products provides a proven cost effective means of prevention.
Iron is an essential trace element in animal feed compounds. Because of its ready availability to the animal iron sulphate in its free flowing dried or monohydrate form is widely used in these preparations.
