CHROMATE REDUCTION IN CEMENT AND CEMENT PREPARATIONS
Pursuant to Directive 2003/53/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 June 2003, relating to restrictions on the use of certain dangerous substances – including such as Chromium VI in cement -, all Member States are obliged to apply this legislation as of 17 January 2005.
This means in practice, that the Chromium VI content is limited to 2 ppm of dry weight for all cement which will be used on the market (except for use in closed manufacturing circles). As most of the natural cements contain more than 8 ppm of Chromium VI (up to 25 ppm), which causes severe chrome dermatitis in the soluble form, the cement has to be treated to reduce the Chromium VI to the ChromiumIII-form which no more will cause any eczema.
The most economical reducing agent for such treatment purpose is Ferrous Sulphate. It can be supplied and used in various forms such as wet Heptahydrate, free flowing Heptahydrate or Monohydrate. Chromate reduction by means of Ferrous Sulphate has already been successfully practiced in the Scandinavian countries for almost 20 years. To cover the increasing demand as a result of the new legislation, copperas generated in line with Titanium Dioxide production can contribute significantly to the adherence to the new legislation.
