Sulphur is the main substance in sulphuric acid. As sulphur is common in metal ores and crude oil a lot of by-product sulphur comes from smelters and oil refineries.
These side streams are the most common sources for sulphuric acid production today. All the qualities obtained are suitable for the production of coagulants in reaction with aluminium or iron raw materials.
The production of sulphuric acid is an exoterm process which produces a lot of excess energy. It is normal to utilise this energy for the production of electricity. Another source of energy comes from the dilution of sulphuric acid in water and the reaction of sulphuric acid with the raw material which means that no external energy is necessary for coagulant production. Sulphuric acid is a substance which produces more energy in its life cycle than it consumes .
Even if the production of sulphuric acid is more and more concentrated into big units it is easy to transport as in its concentrated form it is not corrosive. Therefore tankers with low energy consumption are used to move large quantities.

Sulphuric acid is by far the most important chemical for industrial processes.
